Cleaning a citrine ring

Citrine is a precious crystal who should be carefully storage and clean for long duration of its jewelry. There are many articles made of citrine that need to be cleaned and conserved properly in order to preserve their value and their beauty; we can talk about citrine rings, citrine engagement rings, citrine earrings, pendants, hoops, dangles, necklaces and many other articles that make our collection of precious gemstones jewelry.

To preserve the beautiful yellow or orange color of our citrine rings we need to follow a series of indications that we are going to list as follows:

1. You can use a jewelers cleaning solution which usually consist of ammonia dissolved in water. Ammonia in its free state is a gas with a characteristic pungent odor. When ammonia is dissolved in water it forms ammonium hydroxide, which is the component of the cleaning solution. As ammonium hydroxide is a base this solution is corrosive. When proteins (of bacteria and other microorganisms that are contaminating your jewelry) are exposed to an ammonia solution they tend to denaturalized or loss their structure, therefore killing or at least damaging the microorganism that they belong to. Also, as dirt may contain fats and oils that contaminate our citrine jewelry, ammonia helps their removal by dissolving them in water as fats and oils are only slightly soluble in pure water.

Leaving your citrine rings in this solution for a few hours will remove most of the dirt from the crystal leaving a clean surface. Whilst ammonia solution is safe, ammonium fluoride solutions should be avoid as this products can dissolve the crystal destroying it. Be sure the other components of your ring are compatible with ammonia solution.

2. After treatment with ammonia solution, you can remove the ring and drop it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. Rinse the ring with more water to ensure complete removal of the ammonia.

3. Use a soft toothbrush to scrub the ring gentle, it is preferable to use circular motions rather than scrubbing hard or sawing back and forth. Keep a flow of water as you scrub the ring with the toothbrush.

4. Wipe it and dry it with soft paper towels. Avoid air drying as may cause the crystal to spot.

Finally, avoid using ultrasound cleaning as it may remove citrines color if the stone has been dyed before. Long exposure to heat and sun may change the citrine ring color.

Citrine’s yellow color

The yellow color in citrine, like the one in your citrine rings, is due to the presence of iron in the crystal of this wonderful gemstone. Ionic iron has two main forms in nature, iron(II) and iron(III). The salts of iron II tend to be blue (as iron sulphate, for example) whereas the salts of iron (III) tend to be yellow or orange (as iron(III) chloride). When ionic iron, in the form of iron(III) is trapped into the structure of quartz crystals, during their formation, the iron (III) salts give their yellow color to the crystal. In fact, as we mentioned earlier, the name citrine is derived from its yellow-lemon color.

Natural citrines are mostly pale yellow, but these crystals are difficult to find and usually citrine is obtained by heat other crystals like amethyst or smoky quartzes. Amethyst consists of quartz crystals also, but the main difference with citrine is that their color (purple) is derived from the presence of iron (II) salts in the structure of this gemstone. When this gemstone is heated, a process called oxidation occurs inside the crystals, in which the iron (II) present is transformed to iron (III) changing its color from purple to yellow leaving most of the time a red tint color. Ametrine, a popular stone in the market, consist of a mixture of half citrine and half amethyst. Smokey quartz can also turns into citrine by heating.

The yellow color of citrine has many meanings; sunny, pure, bright yellow color is the easiest color to see, in fact, many persons who cannot distinguish colors can see yellow. The Mayas used to associate this color with the direction South. Traditionally it has been a symbol of the sun and also is the color of the element air. In Hinduism, yellow represent the third, solar plexus chakra, also known as manipura. It represents vitality and will. In Christianity, yellow represents greed. Psychologically, yellow is the happiest color.

Yellow symbolized wisdom, joy, happiness and optimism. Also, it denotes idealism, imagination and optimism. Yellow favors people of high intellect; if you want to improve your ability to express yourself carry a yellow gemstone, like citrine. Also, this color increase eloquence in writers and speakers. It’s ideal to evoke pleasant, cheerful feelings.

Next time when you think about buying a citrine ring, or a couple of citrine earrings, think about the benefits that the yellow color of this gemstone can bring to your life. Their yellow color can help you in many positives ways!

Although your citrine stones can last forever and you can wear them every day if proper care is taken, you should preferably avoid the use of solvents, ultrasound or vapor cleaners. Never use strong products like detergents or any substance like chemicals such as hydrofluoric acid or ammonium fluoride as their surface can be eroded. Remember always to remove your citrine rings before washing the dishes as any hit can break them. The best way to clean them is to use warm water and simple detergent although jeweler’s ammonia solution has been recommended. Try to use and old toothbrush to brush it, using a toothbrush you will be able to get into difficult areas. Cleaning it every two weeks is enough to conserve their beauty.

Finally keep you citrine earrings, rings or pendants away from other jewelry like diamonds to prevent any scratch. These gemstone crystals are weaker than other pieces of jewelry like diamonds and rubies so to avoid any problem keep them in a soft jewelry bag.
